BELIEFS, VALUES + ATTITUDES
DEFINING DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE PRACTICE

ENERGIZE

Developmentally appropriate practice in one word, is INTENTIONALITY.
Picture
Think about when you walk into a classroom, from the perspective of a child--there are so many choices of things to play with, children to see, things to do.  Your suggestions--markers and paper on a table, manipulatives on the floor, a block structure already started--can prompt engagement with the things in your classroom in new ways.  Wield the power of suggestion in your favor--mix up the materials available, put things in surprising places like baby dolls in the block area, or cars with paint in the art area.  See what engages and interests the children, and plan future experiences from there.  This intentionality requires observation, taking down notes, and simply paying attention to where the children go and how they move within the classroom.
Below, select one of the 3 quizzes.  The quiz will show you which elements of intentional teaching are present in your current practice. The quizzes provide different examples of intentional teaching, so choose any one you would like. This quiz is intended to be fun, but also inspire you to think about where you are intentional in your practice and where you might continue to reflect and redesign your classroom.
